Aaron Ekblad was a stud with the Florida Panthers during their Stanley Cup run this past season, and the Toronto Maple Leafs wanted to sign him in free agency.
Throughout the past season, there were times when fans felt as though
Aaron Ekblad was reaching the end of the road as a member of the Florida Panthers.
As the playoffs went on, it started to become clearer that the Panthers wanted to keep the defenseman on the roster. Now, they are making that a reality.
Moments ago, Elliotte Friedman revealed that the Florida Panthers and Aaron Ekblad have agreed to the terms of a new contract.
As it turns out, Ekblad signed for a full eight years; however, he signed at a major discount as this will only cost the Panthers $6.1 million per season.
This means the entirety of the contract is only going to cost the franchise $48.8 million, which is a bargain for that kind of player.
If you are a Toronto Maple Leafs fan, you are feeling pretty down right now as the Leafs missed out on an incredible player who could have been great for this team.
With 13 points in 19 playoff games, Ekblad showed he can anchor the blueline with some offense while also delivering huge hits that can turn the tide of entire games.
Overall, this is a great signing for the Panthers, and all they need to do now is get themselves
Brad Marchand locked up.
If they do that, then that means Ekblad, Bennett, and Marchand will all have taken discounts for the shot at another Stanley Cup.
