Toronto Maple Leafs captain Auston Matthews has not been good so far this season, and an analyst just revealed a statistic that should ring alarm bells for the team.

In 11 games this season, Auston Matthews has just five goals and three assists for a total of eight points, which, quite frankly, is not enough.
Matthews is not injured this season. This means something deeper is happening. Of course, one could point to the absence of Mitch Marner, who used to assist on many of his goals.
However, there is one area of the game in which Matthews has completely regressed. One could even make the argument that the captain has hit rock bottom in this regard.

Auston Matthews has been a problem for the Toronto Maple Leafs

As Michael DiStefano points out, since entering the NHL, no one has more 5v5 goals than Auston Matthews. For many years, he thrived at even strength.
However, since February 1st of last season, he has only six even-strength goals. Furthermore, he only has one goal at 5v5 this season. That makes him the 250th ranked player in the league.
Wow, this stat kind of puts Matthews' scoring woes into perspective.

Auston Matthews has more 5v5 goals than anyone since he joined the NHL.

However, he has only 1G at 5v5 this season, and just 6G at 5v5 since February 1st (0.59 G/60), ranking 250th in the league since then.
Quite simply, this is not acceptable. The Maple Leafs have a huge issue here, and it is something that is going to have to be rectified, and fast.
Auston Matthews had 69 goals just two seasons ago. The idea of him hitting that milestone ever again seems unlikely, which is sad.
However, there is still time to fix this. With some consistent teammates on the top line, there is a world in which Matthews gets back to his old heights.
Or, this could lead to a conversation about Craig Berube and his defensive style that has rendered the captain lost and confused on the offensive end.
