Toronto Maple Leafs captain Auston Matthews has dealt with an injury all season long but thankfully, he and head coach Craig Berube appear to be on the same page.
Twice this season,
Auston Matthews has had to leave the Maple Leafs for a chunk of games so that he could tend to a nagging upper-body injury that was keeping him from being his usual self.
Auston Matthews and his injury were a curse for the Maple Leafs
While he may not be at 100 percent, there is no doubt Matthews is back to the 70-goal pace he is capable of.
In fact, while speaking to David Alter of The Hockey News, Matthews went in-depth on how he feels and whether or not the injury is still affecting him.
"It's been steady. I've been feeling good," Matthews said. "I think it's been pretty good since I've been back. I've been feeling better and better every night. So, you know, I just want to keep that going."
As for head coach Craig Berube, he seems to be in agreement with his captain.
Although he acknowledges Matthews may have some rough moments, there is still a clear improvement happening here.
"Obviously he has games where maybe he's not at his best. But I'm noticing an improvement from game to game with his quickness and speed. And that's really important for me."
With the Leafs entering the final stretch of the year, Auston Matthews is going to have to be at his best if the team wants any chance at going far.
Right now, the team leads the Atlantic Division and if they can hold onto that lead, they will get a favorable draw in the postseason which could propel them to the Eastern Conference Finals.
