Auston Matthews Makes it Clear What he Wants From the Maple Leafs at the Trade Deadline
Toronto Maple Leafs captain Auston Matthews is one of the best players in the world and he understands just how important this trade deadline is for his team.
If you have been following the Toronto Maple Leafs this season, you know that they have been one of the best teams in the league and are viable Stanley Cup contenders.
Despite Auston Matthews being downright mediocre at times, the team has still kept it pushing and with 20 games left, they are looking pretty damn good.
The NHL trade deadline is set to take place on Friday, and this serves as a massive opportunity for general manager Brad Treliving to improve his team and give them a chance in the postseason.
Auston Matthews talks Maple Leafs trade deadline plans
In a new Sportsnet piece from Luke Fox, Matthews was asked about the trade deadline and whether or not he wants to see the team make a trade.
Clearly, he believes it would be good for morale, and he also sees it as an opportunity to reward the guys who have been grinding all year.
«You look at our division, in particular. It's obviously very tight, and we know management is gonna do the best they can. All we can do is just trust in them,» Matthews said. «I mean, of course, you'd love to see a boost, I think, with the way that we've played this year and the position that we're in right now.»
While Auston Matthews has a very clear ask from management right now, he also acknowledges that they are hard at work and he trusts whatever they are about to do.
«We feel really confident, really good about our team and our group. But this time of year, obviously, you see teams adding, and you want to add as well,» Matthews said. "So, I'm sure the management staff are doing a lot of thinking right now, doing a lot of homework and stuff like that. And we'll just leave it in their hands. I'm sure they'll do what's best for the team.»
The Maple Leafs are currently targeting some centers like Scott Laughton and Brayden Schenn, however, there is no guarantee they end up securing their services.
Brad Treliving is being conservative with his assets and this could lead to the Leafs coming up empty-handed.
Only time will tell how this all plays out for the franchise at the deadline.
