Auston Matthews Speaks Out After Connor McDavid Rejects the Toronto Maple Leafs

Yesterday, Connor McDavid put the entire NHL on notice by signing a two-year contract extension with the Edmonton Oilers worth $12.5 million per season.

Many Toronto Maple Leafs fans were hoping that McDavid would come to the Maple Leafs in free agency, but now, that is no longer going to happen.

On Tuesday, McDavid's good friend and adversary, Auston Matthews, was asked about the extension and McDavid's decision to take a pay cut.

As you will read, the Leafs captain was very matter-of-fact about things and acknowledged just how much McDavid wants to win.

If you are a Toronto Maple Leafs fan, you can't help but feel a little bit of jealousy because guys like Matthews, William Nylander, and, previously, Mitch Marner, all tried to maximize their money.

Connor McDavid coming to the Toronto Maple Leafs was always an unrealistic pipe dream. Nevertheless, some fans thought it could happen.

Instead, McDavid will have three more chances to win a cup in Edmonton. If he is unsuccessful, we imagine he will finally jump ship.

With that in mind, it is going to be interesting to see whether or not it is the Leafs or Oilers who end up winning a Stanley Cup first.

Safe money says the Oilers, but you really never know in this era of the NHL.
