Toronto Maple Leafs general manager Brad Treliving spoke to the media today, where he was quite honest about what he would love to acquire for his team.
Brad Treliving has a tough job as general manager of the
Toronto Maple Leafs, and for a multitude of different reasons. Right now, his toughest task is managing the few assets he has so that the team can make a good trade.
For years now, the Maple Leafs have been buyers at the deadline. As a result, they have been forced to sell off draft picks. Now, they have little left to offer, which makes it difficult for other teams to want to do business with them.
Brad Treliving confirms the Toronto Maple Leafs' plans
In fact, according to David Pagnotta of The Fourth Period, the general manager confirmed that the goal right now is to trade for a top-six forward.
Treliving acknowledged that it was a slow summer and that he did work the phones hard. Unfortunately, nothing worked out, and the Leafs were forced to keep it pushing.
It's not from a lack of trying. You're always looking to try to improve your team. I think league-wide, it was a slower summer... We would like to add (a top-6 F).
This admission from Treliving should be music to the ears of Maple Leafs fans. Ultimately, it shows that the team is working hard and is serious about improving.
Whether or not it will be possible for them to get the player that they want still remains to be seen. For now, however, it seems like it is likelier to happen closer to the trade deadline.
Rival teams need a chance to assess their teams for what they are and make educated moves. As a result, the Leafs will have to be patient.
Regardless, this is going to be a fun season, and we look forward to seeing what Brad Treliving is able to craft up.
