Dougie Hamilton Sweepstakes Back On: Are the Toronto Maple Leafs Contenders?

New Jersey Devils defenseman Dougie Hamilton remains one of the premier offensive D-men in the league, and the Toronto Maple Leafs could use a guy like that.
A few months ago, there were all sorts of rumors involving New Jersey Devils defenseman Dougie Hamilton.
With the Devils thinking of bringing in Quinn Hughes to reunite all three brothers together, there is no denying that Hamilton's massive contract needs to go.
The right-handed offensive defenseman could be of use to many teams throughout the NHL, and the Toronto Maple Leafs were one of the franchise's mentioned throughout the Summer.
Could the Toronto Maple Leafs use Dougie Hamilton?
Up until this past week, it felt like the Hamilton conversation was dead in the water. After all, acquiring Hughes is a lot easier said than done.
However, according to Chris Johnston, the possibility of Hamilton moving is very much real. While it won't happen soon, it could happen by the trade deadline.

If the Toronto Maple Leafs were to get involved, they would probably have to drop Morgan Rielly, and at this stage, one has to wonder if that is the right move.
At the end of the day, Hamilton is the same age, and you can make the argument that his decline is going to be steeper than Rielly's due to injury.
Ultimately, the Leafs would need lots of cap space, something they don't have at this very moment in time.
Only time will tell whether or not the Maple Leafs decide to get drastic, and make a huge trade that could completely alter the look of the blue line.
