Ryan O'Reilly was someone the Toronto Maple Leafs were thinking about bringing back last season, although that proved to be dead on arrival.

Ryan O'Reilly's time with the Toronto Maple Leafs was not particularly productive. Fans wanted him to be a top center on the team, and while he was solid, he was not Cup-winning caliber.
Last season, the Maple Leafs were desperate for a middle-six center at the trade deadline. Not to mention, the Nashville Predators were awful, and there was a sense that O'Reilly could leave.
In the end, the Leafs went and got Scott Laughton instead, which is a move that the jury is still out on, at least for right now.

Ryan O'Reilly is not fond of the Toronto Maple Leafs

Recently, Elliotte Friedman spoke about the interest surrounding O'Reilly. He noted that the Maple Leafs were interested, but it was O'Reilly's lack of fondness for Toronto that kept him from moving.
This year, we could see O'Reilly on the move, although this time around, the New Jersey Devils seem like the most likely candidate.
There will be interest in Ryan O'Reilly when and if the time comes; last year they asked him about Toronto, I don't think he was crazy about that idea; New Jersey would covet a player like O'Reilly; there would be others
At the end of the day, O'Reilly had an opportunity to sign with the Toronto Maple Leafs and chose not to.
It should have been obvious from the very beginning that he had absolutely no interest in ever coming back to the franchise.
That said, the Leafs still need some help down the middle, and it feels like their only viable target right now is Nazem Kadri, who would cost them a pretty penny.
Overall, general manager Brad Treliving has a tough job, and it will be interesting to see what he pulls off as the months go on.
