So far in free agency, the Toronto Maple Leafs have not been able to get a lot done, and this has been a sad reality for a team that needs top-six pieces.
Overall, a lot of this has to boil down to just how competitive the market is this year. There aren't a ton of big-name free agents out there, and teams have been clamoring for these players.
On July 1st, pretty much every single top player was off the market early on. Consequently, there aren't a lot of guys left, and the Leafs still have major holes to fill.
Chris Johnston's reality check for the Toronto Maple Leafs
During the latest episode of the
Chris Johnston Show, the insider spoke about the Maple Leafs' desire to go out and get a top-six forward.
However, he noted that this is very unlikely given what is left on the market. While Rust, Rakell, and McCann are options, it just doesn't seem like general manager Brad Treliving is motivated to make those specific moves.
On the CJ Show, CJ says the Leafs might not be able to solve their top six hole this summer-the Leafs just don't have much to trade
CJ mentions Rust, Rakell, and McCann as available names, but the Leafs might not be able to or might not have the desire to get in on those players
2026 is going to be a better year for free agents, although the fans don't want to see a down year. Instead, they want this team to continue making the playoffs.
While a Wild Card spot is on the table this season, it is hard to imagine this current iteration of the Leafs making it past the second round.
Of course, trades are possible, but it won't be easy for the Leafs to make a move given just how few assets they have.
Whatever the case may be, Treliving is in a world of hurt right now and things won't get easier.
