Today, the Toronto Maple Leafs delivered a major update on the condition of Chris Tanev, while also calling up a defenseman from the Toronto Marlies.
Last night,
Chris Tanev was taken off the ice on a stretcher after being hit in the head by Philadelphia Flyers forward
Matvei Michkov.
While this is certainly good news, practically everyone understood that Tanev would have to miss some time. After all, last night was his first game back since suffering a concussion.
Just moments ago, the Maple Leafs officially ruled on Tanev's injury, by making a couple of decisions that impact the team's immediate future.
Chris Tanev placed on injured reserve
According to Toronto Maple Leafs PR, Tanev has officially been placed on the injured reserve, retroactive to November 1st, which was yesterday.
Meanwhile, the Maple Leafs have called up
Dakota Mermis from the Toronto Marlies. If you remember, Mermis was sent down just yesterday as Tanev was re-entering the lineup.
Mermis is going to be the seventh defenseman on the Toronto Maple Leafs going forward, and we probably won't see him in the lineup unless another defenseman gets injured.
His one start this season was not particularly successful, and fans will be cautious to put him back in the lineup so soon.
For now,
Philippe Myers will draw back into the lineup. If one thing is for certain, it is that losing Tanev is a huge blow to the roster.
We wish the defenseman a speedy recovery. Concussions are never easy, and we hope he doesn't rush himself back into the lineup.
