Toronto Maple Leafs forward Matthew Knies has taken a huge leap this season and now that he is about to be a free agent, fans are worried about his status.
Matthew Knies has been one of the best players on the Toronto Maple Leafs this season although that should not be a surprise.
He showed a ton of potential at the end of last season and he has also been placed on a line with Auston Matthews and Mitch Marner, which certainly helps his case.
However, this summer, Knies is going to become a restricted free agent and the Maple Leafs are expected to pay him the big bucks alongside guys like Marner and John Tavares.

Knies could very well get upwards of $8 million per year but with other players above him on the priority list, there is certainly some anxiety about what is going to happen next.
However, according to Sportsnet reporter Luke Fox, the forward has made it crystal clear that he would prefer to remain in Toronto and that this is his main wish.
Matthew Knies has made it clear that he loves being a Maple Leaf and isn't considering leaving Toronto.
He politely declined (@Sportsnet) to discuss the status of extension talks publicly, but there's no doubt Treliving is determined to keep him, having turned down trade interest from rival GMs at the deadline.

Of course, general manager Brad Treliving was adamant about not trading Knies at the trade deadline, despite all of the interest.
In fact, the team turned down a Mikko Rantanen deal because Knies is considered to just be that valuable to the team right now.
Overall, it is going to be a very interesting negotiation process and fans are curious as to what kind of deal he is going to get. Hopefully, it's a deal with lots of term, because Matthew Knies is someone this team needs to keep around for a very long time.
