Toronto Maple Leafs forward Mitch Marner helped Matthew Knies score on the first shot of the game, only to have the goal completely taken away.
Mitch Marner and Matthew Knies have been the perfect linemates for
Auston Matthews this season as they always seem to be in the right place at the right time.
Marner got called for a high stick as he batted the puck out of mid-air. Interestingly enough, the play looked identical to Auston Matthews' goal on Saturday night, which ended up counting.
Mitch Marner annoyed by Matthew Knies play
As you can imagine, this led to quite a bit of confusion as many felt like Knies' goal should have counted. It was a disappointment and Marner was certainly a bit confused, himself.
While speaking to the media after the game, he admitted that he thought the goal should have counted, although he was told that his height was the deciding factor in disallowing.
"I asked the refs after. It's because of my height that it got called off. But I've had some tough bounces with stuff getting called off right now, so hopefully it changes."
In the end, this did not matter nor did it affect the outcome of the game as the Maple Leafs were able to win by a score of 3-2.
It was a solid outing by the Leafs who increased their lead in the Atlantic Division and continue to show that they can get it done when the games get close.
Marner is having a fantastic season and if he can do this in the playoffs, the Leafs will be looking very good. But that is easier said than done.
As for the officiating, the NHL needs to get their guys together and implement some sort of consistency, otherwise fans are going to get annoyed.
