After being hit by Philadelphia Flyers forward Matvei Michkov, Toronto Maple Leafs defenseman Chris Tanev had to be taken to the hospital on Saturday night.
Last night was a hard one for the Toronto Maple Leafs as they lost
Chris Tanev to what looks like yet another concussion.
Since that time, fans have been wondering whether or not Matvei Michkov would face supplemental discipline for his hit. After all, he did hit Tanev in the head, which is something that is often looked at by the league.
Matvei Michkov gets away with a hit on Chris Tanev?
The NHL Department of Player Safety had until 5 PM today to rule on Michkov's infraction. The deadline has passed, and nothing has been done.
This means that the forward will not receive a suspension or a fine for his headshot. The NHL has ruled that this was not intentional and therefore, not worthy of supplemental discipline.
While the aftermath of the hit sure did look bad, it is understandable that the league ended up going down this path.
Michkov did not mean to send Tanev to the hospital, and sometimes, these kinds of things happen during the course of a hockey game.
With that being said, we are hoping for the best for Tanev moving forward. You never want to see a player go through this kind of thing.
We also hope that Michkov isn't beating himself up too much over this. Most reasonable fans understand that this was accidental.
