Toronto Maple Leafs' Active Pursuit of Dougie Hamilton Gets a Serious Update

New Jersey Devils defenseman Dougie Hamilton is reportedly being shopped around, and the Toronto Maple Leafs have a serious interest there.
Dougie Hamilton is a defenseman who has certainly had his fair share of injury struggles as of late. For instance, he only played 20 games during the 2023-24 season.
The season prior, he had 22 goals and 52 assists for 74 points, which made for the best statistical season of his entire career.
In 2024-25, Hamilton had a bit of a dip with nine goals and 31 assists for an even 40 points. Not terrible, but could be better for a guy who makes $9 million per season.
Are the Toronto Maple Leafs pursuing Dougie Hamilton?
Nick Richard of The Leafs Nation is now backing up this report, noting that the Leafs are, indeed, kicking tires on Hamilton, and we don't mean Lewis.
I'm not an insider by any means, but further to this report, I have also heard from a reliable source that the #LeafsForever are among the teams kicking tires on Dougie Hamilton in New Jersey.
Ultimately, Dougie Hamilton is an odd fit for the team. He is a right-handed shot who makes way too much money.
Even if he is an upgrade from
Morgan Rielly, he simply isn't left-handed, and that could create some real problems for the team's defensive pairings.
We don't really see this happening, but it is interesting that general manager Brad Treliving would consider it.
Only time will tell whether or not the Maple Leafs can make some big moves here, especially with training camp in less than two months.
