With the NHL regular season about to begin, the Toronto Maple Leafs have been forced into a heartbreaking decision that involves rookie Easton Cowan.
Easton Cowan is a player that Toronto Maple Leafs fans have been looking forward to watching this season, especially since this would be his rookie season.
Throughout training camp, he did all the right things. He was physical, he never took a shift off, he generated offense, and he finished his checks.
However, there are so many spots on a roster, and with injuries to guys like Scott Laughton, there has been a sense that Cowan might be sent down to the Toronto Marlies.
Easton Cowan sent down by the Toronto Maple Leafs
Earlier today, Cowan was the 13th forward at practice, and it was looking likelier and likelier that he might get cut by the team today. This became especially likely after the team claimed Sammy Blais off waivers.
The team needed to drop a forward to be salary cap compliant. Cowan was the first man on the list, and unfortunately, he will have to start his season with the Toronto Marlies.
This does not mean he cannot play for the Maple Leafs this season. However, it does mean that his NHL debut will be delayed after all that hype.
Overall, Cowan is going to be just fine. When training camp started, fans assumed he would be starting the season with the Marlies.
While the preseason results certainly led us to believe he would at least make the fourth line, we are happy to see he will have a chance to develop.
Only time will tell whether or not Cowan's foray back to the Maple Leafs roster happens sooner rather than later.
No matter what, Cowan should feel proud of the fact that he was able to get himself so close to making the roster on his first try since graduating from the OHL.
