Team Canada is actively searching for a replacement for defenseman Alex Pietrangelo who withdrew himself from the 4 Nations Face-Off following an injury.
Chris Tanev who is currently having an excellent season with the Toronto Maple Leafs might be the ideal candidate to fill the void in the team.
Chris Tanev could be the answer for Team Canada with the absence of Alex Pietrangelo
The Maple Leafs are at the top of the Atlantic Division with a 30-18-2 record and it's in a large part due to Chris Tanev's performance.
The 35-year-old has been
one of the best defensive player in his first season with Toronto and he is earning praise from Craig Berube as one of his favorite players on the roster.
Chris Tanev has scored 14 points, a +18 rating and also ranks third in the league with 132 blocked shots which is showing his commitment and defensive reliability.
He is also known for his steady and calming presence and Tanev's leadership has been very important for the Leafs' success, both on and off the ice.
Team Canada's deadline to name a replacement is February 11, one day before they face Sweden in Montreal.
Elliotte Friedman reported that Canada hopes to finalize the decision before the team assembles, which is making Tanev a strong contender to take the place of Alex Pietrangelo.
Even if he is not flashy, Tanev's stay-at-home defensive style could perfectly fit in Canada's lineup.
His ability to block shots, being strong defensively and providing veteran leadership makes him a logical choice to step in for Pietrangelo.
Whether or not Tanev gets the call, his impact on the Maple Leafs has been undeniable this season.
As the season progresses,
the Toronto native remains a game-changer for his team and potentially, for Team Canada if selected.
