Elliotte Friedman Confirms the Hurricanes Wanted Mitch Marner for Mikko Rantanen

The Toronto Maple Leafs were reportedly getting close to acquiring Mikko Rantanen, however, the Carolina Hurricanes really wanted Mitch Marner.
However, according to Nick Kypreos, the Toronto Maple Leafs were in the mix and were ready to offer Fraser Minten and Easton Cowan, as well as two first-round picks.
In the end, this deal did not take place, although according to Elliotte Friedman, there was almost a league-shattering blockbuster.
Mikko Rantanen for Mitch Marner?
When the Maple Leafs first approached the Carolina Hurricanes, they asked for Mitch Marner in what essentially would have been a one-for-one deal.
The Leafs ended up asking Mitch Marner if he was willing to be traded and he said no, which just shows you that he wants to re-sign in Toronto.
Eventually, general manager Brad Treliving tried to offer up some prospects instead but the deal was ultimately rejected.
The Hurricanes initially asked for Mitch Marner in return for Rantanen. Because it was for Rantanen, the Maple Leafs had to consider it. They told the winger their desire is to sign him, but they had to ask in this case. As is his right, Marner declined to move, re-iterating his desire to stay.
Neither the Maple Leafs, the Hurricanes, nor Marner's agent, Darren Ferris, would comment. But that could have been the biggest blockbuster of the week.

This is a huge deal and something that Leafs fans probably would have never seen coming.
However, Mitch Marner and Mikko Rantanen are both similar players who are worth similar amounts of money.
With Marner's agents playing hardball with the Maple Leafs, it should come as no surprise that Treliving would consider a major move.
Needless to say, this will go down as one of the biggest "what could have beens" in Leafs history.
