Erik Karlsson and the Pittsburgh Penguins could be working towards a breakup, and the Toronto Maple Leafs are a team that some suspect are contenders.
If you are a fan of the Toronto Maple Leafs, you have a rooting interest in the team making some big moves.
Unfortunately, general manager Brad Treliving hasn't been able to take big swings. At the end of the day, he doesn't have the assets to spend.
Having said that, there are big-name players out there, including Erik Karlsson, whom the Pittsburgh Penguins have been shopping around.
Where is Erik Karlsson going?
The Leafs have been in on Karlsson and then out on Karlsson. However, it is now being stated that the Leafs have better chances than you think.
According to Shayne Goldman, all the teams that would love Karlsson should avoid him like the plague.
The Carolina Hurricanes, Florida Panthers, and Ottawa Senators were all mentioned by name.
So moving Karlsson this summer could be the best path, if there is an available buyer. It's just that the options have dwindled over the last couple of weeks. The Hurricanes may not have signed a clear Brent Burns replacement, but management may not want to take another massive swing on defense after acquiring (and signing) K'Andre Miller.
The Panthers are out after extending Aaron Ekblad. The Senators should probably see what Jordan Spence has to offer before committing to Karlsson's contract. Vegas appears to be a better landing spot for Rasmus Andersson.

If you want some offense on the blue line, then Karlsson would be a phenomenal player to go with.
However, at this stage, it still seems pretty unlikely that the Leafs will have the gumption to make that happen.
If Brad Treliving makes it work, he will be revered in Toronto for years to come.
