Toronto Maple Leafs captain Auston Matthews recently did an interview with ESPN for Mother's Day and unsurprisingly, he was emotional about his mom's sacrifice.
Auston Matthews has had an unlikely journey to the NHL. He is a kid from Phoenix, Arizona, which isn't exactly known for producing a ton of hockey stars.
Moreover, he is a kid who came from humble beginnings. His mother is of Mexican descent and was an immigrant to the United States. In order to put her son through hockey, she had to work two jobs.
In fact, Matthews' mom was the subject of a Mother's Day feature on ESPN, where she was interviewed alongside her son.

The interview was quite an emotional one as Matthews' mom spoke about all of the hardship that she had to go through during Auston's upbringing.
Working two jobs was not easy but she understood that Auston had a special gift. While speaking about these sacrifices, Matthews couldn't help but get emotional.
He has tremendous pride when talking about his mom and the interview had him shedding some tears. It is rare to see him express his emotions like this, but that is what makes him human.
Right now, Auston Matthews is in the midst of a difficult season as there have been rumblings that he has been injured for the entirety of the season.
His goal-scoring has taken a bit of a hit, and overall, it is clear that he just isn't the same player that he normally is.
Only time will tell whether or not he can get back to his old self. Of course, the Maple Leafs depend on that as they are currently in the midst of a playoff battle with the Florida Panthers.
The series is tied 2-2 and in Game 5, the Maple Leafs are down 1-0 after the first period. Now is the time for Matthews to buckle down and have the run of his life.
