Toronto Maple Leafs captain Auston Matthews had a goal and an assist against the Carolina Hurricanes on Sunday, but it was not enough for the team to win the game.

Auston Matthews has 14 points in 16 games so far this season, and nine of them are goals. He is starting to find his scoring touch, although the team itself just hasn't been great.
Last night was a great example of this, as the Leafs gave up a two-goal lead to the Carolina Hurricanes. They lost by a score of 5-4, and some fans are hitting the panic button.
This was just a really bad game, and with the Leafs losing two in a row over the weekend, it just feels like the walls are closing in on this team.
However, after yesterday's loss, captain Auston Matthews was not too down about things. In fact, he offered a perspective that fans can appreciate.

Auston Matthews explains the Toronto Maple Leafs' struggles

As he explains, it's the little things that are holding this team back. They have been bad when it comes to execution, and that is the problem.
Not to mention, they are not winning puck battles. They have the capability to, but as it stands, they are finding it tough to get it done effectively.
It's just kind of been the same stuff: details & execution ... I didn't think we won enough puck battles tonight, & just kind of the repetitive stuff that we just can't seem to get right or we can't seem to have a consistency over a full 60 minutes ...
If you are a fan of the Maple Leafs, this explanation may get interpreted as an excuse, and it remains to be seen how many fans will buy it.
That said, this Maple Leafs team is trying to win here, and it's only going to get more difficult if they continue to play poorly in the corners.
On Tuesday, they will have an opportunity to change things against the Boston Bruins.
