Analyst Kevin Papetti of The Athletic claims that Treliving could end up going after defenseman Juuso Valimaki, who currently plays for the Utah Hockey Club. The team might want to swap a left-handed D-man for a right-handed one. If that is the case, then Benning could be used as a means of acquiring Valimaki.
"Valimaki will be a healthy scratch for the second straight game tonight.
He carries a $2M cap hit for this season + next.
He was taken one pick before Liljegren in 2017 by Treliving and the Flames.
Utah could use a righty for lefty trade. Could Valimaki compete with Benoit?"
This is a very interesting proposal and one that the Leafs should definitely consider. This is especially true if push comes to shove and Benning isn't getting a lot of ice time. Whatever the case may be, one has to appreciate the fact that Treliving has a tough job and is working tirelessly to make this Leafs squad a contender.
