Brad Treliving & the Maple Leafs have a single request for Ryan Reaves
Ryan Reaves was suspended for five games for his hit on Darnell Nurse on Saturday and the Toronto Maple Leafs are keeping things in-house.
Overall, it was a big hit and Nurse's head was clearly down. He was also bleeding after the hit which made it look so much worse.
Following the suspension, Brad Treliving spoke to the media and defended his enforcer, noting that Reaves is not a dirty player.
"First of all, you never want to see anybody injured and it was one of those where there's no doubt in my mind, there's no intent on Ryan's part. He's going in to make a hit. It's a hockey play that goes wrong, right?
"I'm not going to sit here and bicker about the game here and there. Like I said, at no point do I think Ryan had any intent for that to happen. It didn't end up the way we wanted to, and I understand the league's position."
However, it was also reported that the team dropped the hammer on Reaves in terms of talking to the media.
Reaves wanted to explain himself to reporters, but the team banished him from doing so, and would not give an explanation as to why.
Ryan Reaves told not to explain himself
Ultimately, Reaves is just going to have to serve his suspension and come back better than before.
At the end of the day, you can't hit people in the head, even if they might be putting their head down in dangerous situations.
Regardless, this is a teachable moment for players around the entire National Hockey League. The league is cracking down on these hits and no one is exempt.
Hopefully, we can keep the game physical while also eliminating dangerous hits that can cause severe injuries.
