Chris Tanev's Father Destroys the Vancouver Canucks For How They Treated His Son
Mike Tanev who is the father of defenseman Chris Tanev has recently criticized the ' handling of his son's contract negotiations during his time with the team.
Leafs GM Brad Treliving acquired Tanev at the NHL Draft and signed him to a six-year deal that will likely be his last major contract.
Chris Tanev's father didn't like how they treated him when he was a Vancouver Canucks
Before joining Toronto, CHris Tanev played for Vancouver, Calgary and Dallas and spent his first 10 seasons with the Canucks and developing into a shutdown defenseman.
However, Mike Tanev revealed on Donnie and Dhali that former GM Jim Benning has undervalued his son.
He recalled a heated contract negotiation where Tanev initially agreed to a $2 million deal, despite being worth more.
"Towards the end of it, I guess in the last year... I got Ross Gurney, who's a Vancouver guy to handle Christopher," said Mike. "Chris phoned me up one day and he says, 'I'm gonna sign in Vancouver for $2M'. I said, you're out of your mind, you're worth $2.5M all day long."
He also claimed Benning took an unnecessary jab at Tanev's toughness during negotiations.
"I ended up phoning Ross and Ross said, 'Benning said Christopher is as soft as baby's poop...' I said tell Benning I'm old enough to remember when Benning played for the Leafs and he used to go in the corner with 12 eggs and come out with 13."
Despite a confrontation during a Canucks father's trip, Tanev's camp moved on until Vancouver let him walk in free agency.
"There was a father's trip, everything was good until the last year when they didn't offer him a contract and Brad Treliving was the smart one when he was in Calgary."
Mike credited Treliving for recognizing his son's value and building a relationship that ultimately helped bring Tanev to Toronto years later.
