Connor McDavid Could Be Making His Decision on the Toronto Maple Leafs Very Soon

Edmonton Oilers captain Connor McDavid is eligible for a contract extension, but after a disappointing playoffs, some fans think the Toronto Maple Leafs are in play.
Connor McDavid is one of the best players in the history of the NHL, although it is clear that he has a bit of a dilemma on his hands.
Next summer, he will become a free agent, and every single team in the NHL will be looking to offer him a new deal, providing he hasn't already signed a contract extension.
The Toronto Maple Leafs are one of the teams interested in McDavid, especially since Mitch Marner is gone, and McDavid's childhood team was the Original Six powerhouse.
Where is Connor McDavid going in free agency?
McDavid has been eligible for a contract extension for a month now, and there have been no reports of contract negotiations.
However, Ryan Rishaug is now reporting that if the two sides do discuss a deal, it will happen either now (late July), or it will begin next week as August begins.
Rishaug said on July 1st that a late July early August McDavid extension was possible. Haven't been a ton of reports, seems like two sides are keeping it quiet. We'll see if we get news in the next few weeks.
This is going to be a critical time for the Toronto Maple Leafs, as they will find out whether or not they have a shot to sign McDavid next summer.
As for the Oilers, this is going to be huge for the future of their franchise. McDavid will cost about $16 million per season, and he will likely only sign for four or five years.
It seems likelier than not that McDavid will stick with the Oilers for the time being.
However, if he doesn't win a Cup soon, he may decide that Edmonton is no longer the place for him.
