Toronto Maple Leafs defenseman Morgan Rielly is likely to stay in Toronto for the long term, although the trade rumors have certainly been causing a stir as of late.
Unfortunately, with the defenseman getting older, there are some fans who believe he needs to be traded immediately, especially with his $7.5 million cap hit.
Do the Toronto Maple Leafs want to keep Morgan Rielly?
Despite this decision, Rielly still found his way to David Pagnotta's trade watchlist for
The Fourth Period.
There is a caveat here, as Pagnotta acknowledges that the defenseman has said no to a trade. Instead, he simply states that the defenseman is at the bottom of the list. One can infer that he believes things could change soon.
Rielly has a full no-movement clause and controls his fate. During his exit interview with the media in May, Rielly said he hadn't thought about leaving Toronto, but speculation across the league suggests the Leafs may explore a move. For that, we list him at the bottom of our trade watch.
Morgan Rielly is still a good defenseman and can still be incredibly useful to the Maple Leafs franchise.
However, the team will be hoping for him to have a bounce-back campaign in 2025-26. If he doesn't, then they may put more pressure on a potential trade.
Whatever the case may be, Rielly himself understands he needs to be better, and we expect him to take this upcoming season seriously.
Everyone on the Leafs will have to step up, and that includes the veteran guys.
