Toronto Maple Leafs head coach Craig Berube has been forced to deal with a struggling Scott Laughton who has had a poor season for all intents and purposes.
Unfortunately, this has not been a particularly good trade so far as the center has struggled since becoming a member of his hometown team.
While he was supposed to take over as the franchise's third-line center, he has been demoted to the fourth line while the team continues on a with a third line of
Max Domi,
Bobby McMann, and Nick Robertson.
Craig Berube praises Scott Laughton
Since becoming a member of the Leafs, Laughton has not been able to register a single point, which has many wondering if it was a mistake to acquire his services.
Overall, it has not been looking good for the veteran, even if his services are primarily about defense and his grit and grind mentality in the playoffs.
"I think he's trying to probably play the game without making mistakes and he's overthinking things. Be aggressive, do your thing, and that will come around, I do believe that. He wants to do well and he just has to loosen up."
If Scott Laughton doesn't get any better, the Leafs may just have to scratch him to send a bit of a message.
The fact that the team traded away a first-round pick for this is kind of embarrassing and the only thing masking this mistake is the fact they have won two in a row.
If and when the Leafs start losing again, the Laughton trade will be put back under the microscope, especially if he doesn't start producing.
