Mark Giordano's last NHL season was with the Toronto Maple Leafs, and now, he is setting his sights on being a coach and mentor for the next generation.

One of the best defensemen of the last couple of decades is none other than Mark Giordano. He was loved by his teammates and has always made sure to put in a maximum effort night in and night out.
That said, it only makes sense that the next generation of hockey players would look to him for wisdom, advice, and even some coaching.
That is going to be the case for the next few weeks, as Giordano has been enlisted to be the defense coach for projected number one overall draft pick Matthew Schaefer.

Mark Giordano to coach Matthew Schaefer

Schaefer revealed as much to NHL.com's latest NHL Entry Draft special on the Erie Otters standout. It is clear that the kid has a good head on his shoulders if he is choosing Giordano.
I'm working out with (trainer) Bryan Marshall, and my defense coach is (former NHL defenseman) Mark Giordano, so I'm super excited to work with him. I'm going to be skating with him a lot.

The defenseman has been through a lot over the past couple of years as he lost both his mother and his billet mom. However, he has been an inspiration through all of this.
I obviously miss her so much. She was definitely one of the strongest people I know because she had to go through so much. And, of course, you never want to see your mom go through that. But I know she's going to be here with me every day, no matter what I'm doing. She's always right by my side with her strength. She's a tough woman.

The New York Islanders have the first overall pick this season, and it is expected that they will use it on an offensive defenseman.
However, there is no telling what is next for Schaeffer. He was injured for much of this season, which affected his ability to impress scouts.
Regardless, he remains one of the standouts and we're sure Giordano will help him get to where he needs to be.
