Gary Bettman Reportedly on His Way Out as NHL Commissioner

NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman has been working with the league for over 30 years now and at the age of 72, some believe it is time for him to retire.
When Gary Bettman entered the NHL over 30 years ago, his goal was clear: expand the league to the South and make hockey a bigger sport than it was when he arrived.

For the most part, Bettman was able to do just that, for better or for worse. You might not agree with him but you have to respect him.
Now, however, a new report from The Athletic suggests that Bettman is ready to ride off into the sunset and retire in a couple of years.
This is something that was suggested by Minnesota Wild owner Craig Leipold.
"That's a couple years down the road and we're doing the planning now, and we have to make sure we get it right when he leaves."
The Commissioner responded to the reports noting that while he has brought up retirement, he is not ready to leave just yet.
"I raised the specter that, at some point, this is something the league is going to have to deal with because when you're dealing with a CEO who has been doing this as long as I have, it's a more complicated process," Bettman said. "But the only discussion that was had was with three-plus decades at this job, at some point, the league is going to have to deal with the reality that I can't do this forever. I just wanted to put it on their radar. When you don't have the energy and the passion you have to think about it. The good news is I have the energy, and I have the passion. I love what I do, and actually, I enjoy doing what I'm doing probably more than I ever would enjoy retirement. I'm not wired to be retired."
Essentially, the NHL may have to wait a few years before Bettman actually decides to go anywhere.
Regardless, it is going to be very interesting to see what direction the league goes in under someone else's leadership.
Hopefully, this next commissioner is a bit more popular and doesn't always get booed during the Stanley Cup presentation.
