Toronto Maple Leafs general manager Brad Treliving is not in an enviable position right now, and it appears as though free agency is going to be a long process.

Brad Treliving has a lot to worry about this summer, especially with everything going on with guys like Mitch Marner, John Tavares, and Matthew Knies.
The latter two have been a disaster with contract negotiations, while Marner is surely leaving the team. Needless to say, the general manager must perform some miracles.
With free agency on the horizon, the Leafs have quite a few targets. Chief among them are guys like Aaron Ekblad and Brad Marchand. However, there are no guarantees in the NHL.

According to Chris Johnston, the chances of Treliving getting his job done in the first week of July are slim to none. Instead, things could draw out through September.
The Leafs have had issues in the past attract free agents, and Johnston just thinks the Leafs won't have the easiest time getting the guys at the top of their wish list.
I think it's going to be a long summer for Brad Treliving. It's not just going to be, 'Hey, sign three depth players on July 1st and put up the gone fishing sign.' So no matter how this all plays out, it's probably going to be a work in progress right into September and training camp.

This is going to be a scary truth for a lot of the fans out there, but it's real. When free agency comes around, you have to prepare for these kinds of things to happen.
The summer is going to be tough, and it is likelier than not that the Leafs actually get worse before they get better. After all, losing a guy like Marner is a huge blow.
Either way, you have to appreciate the position Brad Treliving finds himself in right now. Hopefully, he embraces the challenge ahead.
Meanwhile, fans will also be looking out for the NHL Draft, which is set to begin on July 27th, and could bring about some trades.
