Toronto Maple Leafs forward John Tavares ended up breaking a franchise record on Sunday night after he scored a hat trick against one of the NHL's worst teams, the Buffalo Sabres.
While
Tavares may have lost the captaincy to
Auston Matthews, he has still been amazing this year with 15 goals and 13 assists through the first 30 games of the year.
Three of those goals came last night in a comeback performance against the Buffalo Sabres, who have now lost 10 in a row after the Leafs' 5-3 victory.
John Tavares breaks a Toronto Maple Leafs record
After losing the captaincy to Auston Matthews, some probably figured that Tavares would lose motivation and in turn, lose a step.
However, that has not been the case. Instead, he has been completely reinvigorated and the Maple Leafs are definitely loving this right now.
According to Leafs Latest, Tavares' performance on Sunday evening actually set a franchise record. Tavares is now the oldest in team history to get himself a natural hat trick.
This is certainly a special record to break, and the fact it is a natural hat trick makes this that much more impressive.
Not only did Tavares score the tying goal, he also got the game-winner, and the game-ender on the empty net.
It will be very interesting to see how Tavares is able to keep this up as the season goes on.
Overall, he is up for a new contract, and if he continues to play this way, the Maple Leafs may not even be able to afford him.
