Toronto Maple Leafs enforcer Ryan Reaves tried to fight Garnet Hathaway of the Philadelphia Flyers last week and it ultimately led to a whole lot of nothing.
Ryan Reaves hasn't been in a single fight this season, although fans were convinced his first would come last week as the Leafs took part in a rematch against the Philadelphia Flyers.
"I asked (Hathaway) on the draw when we lined up. I think it was right after Dew fought. He was on the ice. I went on the left wing, and I asked him. He said, 'No,' and he was awfully quiet for the rest of the game," Reaves told Sportsnet. "I think I've asked Hathaway before in my career, and he's never gone me. I might be a little out of his weight class, to be honest."
Reaves was then asked about how he hasn't gotten into a fight all season.
This led to some interesting comments about how there aren't many enforcers left, which has led to a lack of opportunity.
"There's not as many (willing fighters) around; I think we've been on a little stretch where we haven't played many guys like that. We have a couple coming up here this week, actually. So, hopefully I get an opportunity to get one."
Ryan Reaves then concluded by noting that this is very foreign to him, and he would love to get into a tilt sooner rather than later.
"Yeah, it's the longest I've gone without one. I would like one, for sure. I mean, that's what I'm here for. Or part of the reason I'm here. To not have one this late in season is new for me. So, I would definitely like one or two soon.
If Reaves doesn't get into a scrap soon, he is at risk of losing his spot on the team completely.
Needless to say, it really does feel like enforcers are a dead breed in the NHL.
