Toronto Maple Leafs goaltender Dennis Hildeby got the start against the Philadelphia Flyers and he ended up propelling the team to a truly impressive win.
Dennis Hildeby's first three starts in the NHL weren't necessarily disastrous, although they weren't exactly impressive either.
Craig Berube gives his thoughts on goaltender Dennis Hildeby
Hildeby and the Maple Leafs won by a score of 3-2, with the goalie turning aside 30 of 32 shots. Moreover, he had some fantastic saves during overtime to keep his team in the game.
After the match, head coach Craig Berube showered Hildeby with praise, crediting the backup for how he handled himself all night long.
«Very good. I thought he was a big part of the win. He made some key saves, and a couple of key saves in OT. He was pretty calm and cool in there. He played the puck well. He looked good. He looked solid.»
These comments suggest that moving forward, Hildeby will remain the Leafs backup, while
Matt Murray will have to stay down with the Toronto Marlies.
In four starts this season, Hildeby has a record of 3-1 with a goals-against average of 3.23 and a save percentage of .892.
These numbers are nothing to write home about, however, this is an improvement from his numbers prior to last night's game.
After all, Hildeby has only given us a four-game sample size, so eventually, his numbers will average out. A few more solid performances and that GAA will be below 3.
Of course, once
Anthony Stolarz returns, Hildeby will be sent back down to the Marlies.
In the meantime, the Maple Leafs can sleep easy knowing they have a solid young backup who has a real future in the league.
