Toronto Maple Leafs forward John Tavares is up for a new contract, and recently, NHL Insider Frank Seravalli offered some updates on where both sides are right now.
Tavares has been sensational so far this season as he has amassed 15 goals and 13 assists in the first 30 games of the NHL season.
Furthermore, his seven-year, $77 million deal expires at the end of this season, and he is expected to sign an extension with the Toronto Maple Leafs.
John Tavares and the Toronto Maple Leafs continue to negotiate
John Tavares is aging which means he is going to be taking a pay cut on his next contract.
While speaking to JD Bunkis of Sportsnet, NHL Insider Frank Seravalli spoke on the contract talks between Tavares and the Maple Leafs.
As he explains, the both sides are having good conversations and these negotiations have been ongoing for months.
"I do think this is a deal that can get done during the year, and I think they've had some pretty fruitful discussions going back to, I think, training camp. Maybe even a little bit before that."
As for the hold-up, well it seems like Tavares is taking a wait-and-see approach based on his production. He doesn't want to take a huge pay cut if he doesn't have to.
"I think it really comes down to structure and how much a haircut is John Tavares willing to accept to remain a Toronto Maple Leaf?"
The Maple Leafs are a better team with Tavares and Marner on the roster, so it is imperative that they get these negotiations over with. This is not a situation they want to be dealing with throughout the summer.
