Original Six Franchise Reportedly Set to Join the Mitch Marner Sweepstakes

Toronto Maple Leafs forward Mitch Marner is set to enter free agency this summer and there are a lot of teams that are willing to pay him an absurd amount of money.
Mitch Marner is going to be the most sought after free agent this summer and that is not a particularly good thing for the Toronto Maple Leafs.
Overall, the price for Marner is going to be a lot and there are some folks out there who believe that the forward could be signed for upwards of $14 million.
However, the only way he gets a contract like that is if he signs with a team that is a little too desperate and one of those teams is the Detroit Red Wings.

While speaking to Jeff Marek, Shayna Goldman made the point that the Red Wings have a ton of cap space left which puts them in a unique spot.
Marner is a star that could help the team win and they would be compelled to make that move.
"$22 million dollars in cap space, Larkin is locked up, Seider is locked up. I cant't help but think, like it's a not a great free agent class, and I'm getting way ahead of myself here because we haven't seen the playoffs yet, but if you're the Detroit Red Wings, how do you not make a play for Mitch Marner?"
Goldman believes Steve Yzerman has some solid ideas about making this Leafs team better and that improvement is possible.
"I would ask this for any general manager, but especially Steve Yzerman. I felt like he was onto something... I was like okay let him cook, he has ideas, I feel like he's going the right direction, and last season was the biggest let down in the world from the Jake Walman trade to the nothingness really that followed, I am so disappointed. How does he not do it? But then again, I look at last year and go 'well he didn't'."
At the end of the day, the Leafs are going to be just as motivated to get Marner a deal and for very good reason.
This Leafs team might just go on a deep run and if Marner is a huge contributor, they won't want to see him go.
