Despite being down 3-1 in the third period to the Detroit Red Wings, the Toronto Maple Leafs came back to win their final game of the regular season.
The
Toronto Maple Leafs are already in the playoffs and they have already won the Atlantic Division. Going into tonight's game against the Red Wings, they had noting to play for.
After the second period, the lack of urgency from the Maple Leafs showed as they were losing by a score of 3-1.
However, the comeback efforts started and they were pretty glorious. It all started with
Philippe Myers scoring a beautiful goal to make it 3-2.
The period continued to go on with the Leafs pressing but there was no telling if they would be able to pull a win out of their hats.
Then, with two seconds to go in the game,
Chris Tanev scored out of nowhere and it allowed the Leafs to push this game to overtime where anything can happen.
In overtime, head coach Craig Berube decided to play some unlikely guys. This eventually led to a goal as
Dakota Mermis set up Scott Laughton for the winner.
Laughton had become a whipping boy since his trade to the team and now, he is a hero who completed an epic comeback against a division rival in the final game of the season.
Now, the Leafs finish off the season on a huge run and the Ottawa Senators should be very scared about what is in front of them going forward.
Hopefully, this success translates into the playoffs. The fans are yearning for something to cheer for here and it feels like it might be the Leafs' year.
