If you were paying attention to junior hockey this season, then you certainly heard about
Austin Elliott, who had one of the greatest seasons we've ever seen.
Between the Saskatoon Blades and the London Knights, Elliott finished with a combined record of 54-3, including the playoffs and the Memorial Cup.
Austin Elliott earns Toronto Maple Leafs invite
In the regular season, Elliott had a save percentage of .924 and a goals-against average of 2.10. Meanwhile, in the playoffs, he had a save percentage of .906 and a goals-against average of 2.46.
These numbers were truly sensational, and they were worthy of praise. Shockingly, the 21-year-old was never drafted into the NHL. Instead, he is an undrafted free agent looking for his next hockey home.
That is where the Toronto Maple Leafs come in. According to the OHL, Elliott has been invited as a free agent to the Leafs' training camp.
This is an opportunity that could very well lead to a contract, and perhaps even a stint with the Toronto Marlies. We could even see him in the Leafs' preseason.
Of course, the Leafs already have a ton of goalies in their system, which would make it difficult for Elliott to establish himself in any meaningful way.
Having said that, we are excited to see what Elliott can do. Given his recent performance, there is no doubt that he has a bright future ahead of him.
We hope he continues down this positive path and proves all of the teams that didn't draft him wrong.
