Toronto Maple Leafs Presented Golden Opportunity Against the Panthers and It's Not What You Think

The Toronto Maple Leafs are playing the Florida Panthers tonight and while the Atlantic Division is on the line, there is something else the Leafs are fighting for.
With the Tampa Bay Lightning on a tear and the Florida Panthers proving to be formidable all season long, the Leafs still find themselves battling for the Atlantic Division.
Every contender has played 74 games and the Leafs are currently ahead by a single point with 94. The Lightning have 93 and the Panthers have 92.
A win against the Panthers tonight could put them four points up on a rival which is a very good place to be. It is either that, or they end up tied.
Toronto Maple Leafs and the NHL Playoffs
However, while the Atlantic Division is certainly going to be on the team's mind tonight, there is something else at stake for the Maple Leafs.
According to Luke Fox, picking up a point tonight would ensure that the Maple Leafs make the playoffs for the ninth season in a row, which is a pretty amazing accomplishment.
Based on the team's results this season, it seemed pretty clear that they would make the postseason. Not to mention, it is unlikely that they would collapse with eight games left in the season.
Regardless, having that guarantee is always a good thing and we're sure the Leafs are motivated to have one of their best games of the entire NHL season.
While the team hasn't had a ton of playoff success over the years, head coach Craig Berube is seemingly preparing them very well for this journey.
One can only hope that they continue down this path and give the fans what they have been clamoring for, for decades at this point.
This is a Leafs team with lots of talent, solid defense, and good goaltending. These are the ingredients for a championship team.
