William Nylander demands more ice time, Craig Berube responds
William Nylander is demanding more ice time from Toronto Maple Leafs head coach Craig Berube, which is a pretty massive demand of your new bench boss.
Last season, Nylander was averaging about 19:55 of ice time per game. Now, he is just over 18 minutes per game. The ice time was greatly reduced, and as he told Mark Masters, he believes he should be on the ice a whole lot more.
"I think it helps my game a lot to do what I want to be able to do out there so, yeah, hopefully that's something we can figure out"
Berube actually responded to his superstar in a positive way. He noted that Nylander is a sensational player although his reduction in ice time has to do with not being on the penalty kill. That said, Berube wants to get Nylander on the ice as much as humanly possible.
"I have no problem with it ... We talk about it. He killed penalties last year. He's not killing penalties, so that's a little bit of ice time there that's off. What I do is I try & get him out there, if deserved, as much as I can"
Nylander acknowledged this to be true, claiming that he misses being on the penalty kill. Whether or not he gets put back on the PK, remains to be seen at this point.
"PKing is fun. It's good to get in the game that way. I mean, if there's a lot of penalties & stuff like that. It will keep you going. Of course I miss PKing."
