Igor Shesterkin and the New York Rangers blow up the goaltending market with historic deal

The New York Rangers and goalie Igor Shesterkin have agreed to the terms of a new contract extension that is going to change the goaltending market for years to come.
Overall, today was a big day for the New York Rangers as earlier in the afternoon, they officially traded Jacob Trouba to the Anaheim Ducks in a move that took $8 million off of their books.
This turned out to be the catalyst for signing Igor Shesterkin to a massive contract that has certainly shaken the NHL to its core.
Coming into the season, everyone knew that somewhere down the line, Shesterkin would become the highest-paid goalie in the National Hockey League.
It was not a matter of if, but it was a matter of when, and that question was answered just about an hour ago.
Igor Shesterkin locked up for years
According to Elliotte Friedman of Sportsnet, Shesterkin has signed an eight-year deal with an AAV of $11.5 million. This means the entire contract is worth $92 million.
This is one of those deals that is going to cause a whole lot of debate as it pertains to Shesterkin's worth and whether or not he deserves such a massive deal.
However, there are plenty of fans out there who would argue that Shesterkin is more than worth this kind of price tag.
Shesterkin is arguably the best goalie in the league, and with someone like Andrei Vasilevskiy making $9.5 million, Shesterkin deserves the extra cash.
Not to mention, we are now at a point where the salary cap is going to increase, and teams have more room to over indulge.
Whatever the case may be, this contract is a huge milestone for goaltenders across the NHL.
