After almost being taken out by a JT Miller one-timer, Toronto Maple Leafs goaltender Anthony Stolarz may have just helped revolutionize the NHL in a positive way.
A couple of weeks ago, the Toronto Maple Leafs defeated the New York Rangers in overtime, and it was a huge game for
Anthony Stolarz.
During that game, Stolarz stopped a one-timer from JT Miller, and it could have been a disaster as the goaltender's goalie mask came off.
Typically, the whistle is supposed to be blown when a mask comes off. However, in the exception of an immediate scoring chance, the play can go on.
NHL goalies may need to thank Anthony Stolarz
According to Elliotte Friedman, there are currently some proposals for a change that could make the lives of goalies that much better.
In fact, it seems like instead of changing the rule, the league would rather redesign the goalie masks so that there are no buckles that keep popping off.
There was another alternative presented to me yesterday. The Players' Association, the goalies, everybody, the league would have to work on this, but what if we go away from buckles?
This could be a major change, and while some may find it to be not enough, it is a least a step in the right direction.
Any kind of evolution to equipment is something that should be welcomed with open arms.
However, this is something that needs to be fixed as quickly as possible.
