Auston Matthews Delivers Incredible Message to Alexander Ovechkin After Breaking Wayne Gretzky's Record

Toronto Maple Leafs captain Auston Matthews had a special message for Alexander Ovechkin who made history today, breaking Wayne Gretzky's scoring record.
Today was a record-breaking day for Alexander Ovechkin as he scored the 895th goal of his career, surpassing Wayne Gretzky for first all-time on the list.
It was a goal that fans were anticipating and it happened against a New York Islanders team that was trying to avoid being part of history.
While the Islanders did win the game, there is no doubt that the story was Ovi, who was able to come through with a special record that has the potential to never be broken.
Auston Matthews speaks to Alexander Ovechkin
If someone were to break the record, it would be Auston Matthews, who is currently two goals away from reaching 400.
In fact, after breaking the record, the Toronto Maple Leafs put up a video on social media in which Matthews showed his respects to Ovi and congratulated him.
"Ovi, congratulations on breaking the all-time goal records, one of my all-time favourite players since you came into the league. Loved watching you, it's been an honour to compete against you, an incredible incredible record. Congrats."
The entire NHL has been congratulating Ovechkin for his record and it is very much deserved. No one thought Gretzky would be surpassed.
Having said that, Matthews is on pace to have a similar career to Ovi, the only issue is staying healthy and keeping up the pace.
It is easy to be good out of the gate but doing it at the age of 39 is something truly special and you have to appreciate Ovechkin for it.
As for Wayne Gretzky, he will always have the points record which is perhaps the craziest in the entire history of the NHL.
