Washington Capitals captain Alexander Ovechkin has just done the unimaginable as he has broken the NHL scoring record set by Wayne Gretzky back in 1999.
On Friday night agains the Chicago Blackhawks,
Alexander Ovechkin found himself two goals away from tying Wayne Gretzky's all-time goals record. He needed a hat trick to break the record.
The Russian superstar was supposed to be on the ice during the Blackhawks' empty net, but he refused. He wanted the record-breaking goal to be on an actual goaltender.
It was a typical move from a guy like Ovechkin, and you have to appreciate the fact that he wants this record to be as special as humanly possible.
Alexander Ovechkin stands alone in the NHL history books
Well, today, the Washington Capitals took on the New York Islanders in what could have been the record-breaking day.
That is exactly what Ovi did as he netted his 895th goal thus becoming the greatest goal-scorer in the entire history of the NHL.
Technically, Ovechkin still doesn't have the overall record which includes the playoffs, but he is only 50 goal behind Gretzky in that category and will likely surpass the record next season.
However, the regular season goals record is the one that everyone remembers and it is the one that everyone cares about. Well, Ovi has sole possession of it.
This is an accomplishment that many never thought would be possible, yet somehow, he pulled it off with yet another 40+ goal season at the age of 39.
Alexander Ovechkin is one of the greatest players in the history of the National Hockey League and he deserves his flowers.
