Washington Capitals superstar Alexander Ovechkin has made history by tying the goals record set by Wayne Gretzky. A record no one was supposed to break.
In the third period of tonight's game between the Washington Capitals and the Chicago Blackhawks,
Alexander Ovechkin scored his second of the night which just so happened to be the 894th of his career.
He is now tied with Wayne Gretzky for the most goals in the history of the NHL. He needs one more to break the record.
Gretzky is in the building for tonight's game and this was a truly amazing moment for the history of the NHL. Gary Bettman understands the weight of this and was also in attendance.
As you can imagine, Ovi's goal had the entire arena jumping for joy, and it helps that the team is in Washington for tonight's game.
Now, the fans are awaiting the record-breaking goal which could come at any moment. With the Capitals up 4-3 in the game, there is a chance Ovechkin gets it with an open net.
He is a player who deserves this moment and he has a chance to break the record in fewer games that Gretzky which is simply unfathomable.

Alexander Ovechkin is someone who is going to play at least one more season in the NHL which means we could see him expand on the record in a big way.
He has the potential to hit 950 goals, although 1000 is probably out of reach given his age.
Regardless, the record is at his fingertips and this is one of the coolest moments in the entire history of the National Hockey League.
Capitals fans have been blessed for many years, and there is no telling what they can accomplish this season with one of the best records in the NHL.
