Toronto Maple Leafs captain Auston Matthews has been dealing with a baffling upper-body injury and the latest update from Craig Berube is not very encouraging.
The Maple Leafs captain has been dealing with an injury since the start of the year, and although he came back for a brief period,
Auston Matthews has found himself back out of the lineup.
Auston Matthews and the Toronto Maple Leafs face a conundrum
Overall, it seems clear to everyone that he should not be playing, especially not at the 4 Nations Face-Off in February.
Today, Maple Leafs head coach Craig Berube noted that if you expected the captain to be back tonight, you would be mistaken.
In fact, Auston Matthews will not play at all this weekend, and that includes Saturday night's match against the Washington Capitals.
This is probably for the best knowing what we know about the injury to the captain.
He has not been able to get over it for two months at this stage, which means the Leafs need to just sit him down for as long as possible.
If he were to play at the 4 Nations Face-Off, it would be a huge mistake that could have some very dire consequences.
At the end of the day, someone needs to step up and tell Auston that he doesn't need to risk his health.
Instead, the Leafs need him to get right in time for the postseason, which is what is truly important to the team.
