Toronto Maple Leafs captain Auston Matthews will be the captain for Team USA at the Olympics, although a second Leafs player will be on the ice as well.
The Olympics are coming up in February, and soon, the US Men's Olympic Team will host an orientation camp to determine which players officially make the roster.
Today, an announcement was made with all 44 players who were invited to the camp, and as it turns out, Matthews is not the only Maple Leafs star in attendance.
After a sensational couple of years in the National Hockey League, Matthew Knies has officially been invited to the orientation camp.
Now,
Knies will be able to prove his worth among some of the best players in the United States. Not to mention, he gets to do it with the guidance of Auston Matthews.
Given the influence of Matthews, perhaps we could see Knies make the team and potentially get some playing time with Matthews on the top line.
Of course, making the team is not going to be easy, as the roster that went to the 4 Nations Face-Off is going to get priority.
However, if Knies has a strong camp and has a phenomenal start to the NHL season, then we could certainly see something cool happen.
Knies making the team would be unexpected for a lot of the Maple Leafs fans out there, and we're sure they will be looking forward to seeing him in a Team USA jersey.
Only time will tell whether or not Knies can work his way into one of the most coveted tournaments in hockey.
