Brad Treliving Dashes the Dreams of Maple Leafs Fans with Latest Ramblings About the Trade Deadline
Toronto Maple Leafs general manager Brad Treliving spoke to the media about the trade deadline and his comments are definitely going to raise some eyebrows.
Brad Treliving has his work cut out for him at the NHL trade deadline and for good reason. His team is first in the Atlantic Division and there is a real possibility that this team can go far in the Eastern Conference playoffs.
However, there are some key areas where the Toronto Maple Leafs can improve. One of those areas is at the center position and the other is on defense.
Brad Treliving is feeling the pressure at the trade deadline
Recently, Treliving spoke to the media and it was here where he talked about the deadline and what is out there this week.
As he explained, it is hard to say what the plan is right now because most teams have not made their intentions known.
«I'm not going to get into too much about the deadline, other than to say we're going to try to help ourselves. We want to improve our team-that's pretty breaking news, isn't it? The trick is determining fact from fiction and figuring out which players are actually available. There are still a lot of teams in the race. If I had to categorize it, I'd say it's busy-you're talking to a lot of people-but compared to past years, it feels a little slower. I think that's because more teams than usual haven't declared their intentions yet."
Furthermore, Treliving made some eye-opening statements about how fans should not be expecting the team to do very much moving forward.
Overall, he believes that it is hard to make real blockbuster moves and that the expectations shouldn't be so high for the Maple Leafs to swing for the fences.
"Historically, if you look back at attention-grabbing deadline deals, how many have truly paid off? That's not to say we're doing or not doing anything specific, but it's worth considering. It's not about taking big swings-it's about identifying where you can help your team the most. Sometimes, moving the needle doesn't require a flashy move-it's about shoring up key areas. Then, of course, you have to consider what's available, what the cost is, and how it all fits."
Lastly, the general manager said that a defenseman is definitely in the cards for the Leafs, but they mostly want to do whatever they can to improve the team.
"We signed a bunch of defensemen, but you can never have too many. If something makes sense for us, we'll explore it.
There are plenty of conversations happening, and we certainly want to help ourselves. We'll see how things play out. We're looking at all sorts of areas.
At the end of the day, I like our team. My goal is to see if we can make it better by Friday than it is today.»
So there you have it Maple Leafs fans. You might want to temper your expectations here just a little bit.
While some trades are still likely to happen, they might not include the players on your wish list.
