Toronto Maple Leafs forward Mitch Marner is projected to become a free agent on July 1st, and general manager Brad Treliving must deal with the consequences.

Mitch Marner is fresh off a season in which he had 102 points and 75 assists. Simply put, there are a whole lot of teams out there who would love to acquire the forward's services.
As of July 1st, he will become an unrestricted free agent, and it is expected that the superstar winger will test the free agent market.
Meanwhile, the Maple Leafs have yet to make a concrete decision on Marner's future. For the most part, general manager Brad Treliving has played coy on what he wants to do.

What's next for Mitch Marner and the Toronto Maple Leafs?

During a press conference on Thursday, Treliving leaked some very interesting details of a conversation he had with Marner after the season.
Based on these comments, it would appear as though the Leafs are not committed to the idea of bringing Marner back. Instead, a mutual breakup could be on the way here.
«This isn't a deflection. I think Mitch is a tremendous player,» Treliving said. «I think he's a star. We're in that process right now. I had a meeting with all of the players individually, we do our exit meetings. Mitch and I had a discussion. It's emotional right now. My discussion with Mitch was 'let's all take a step back, let's take a deep breath.' I gotta decompress a little bit.»
The next few weeks are going to be fascinating. We are officially on June 1st, which means free agency is officially a month away.
This is going to lead to some truly interesting storylines, and the fans are going to be anxious throughout all of it.
Losing a guy like Mitch Marner would be a hard pill to swallow. However, sometimes, you have to digest these kinds of losses in order to get better in the long term.
While a lot of Maple Leafs fans will find that hard to hear, it is absolutely true. We just hope the front office knows what they're doing.
