Toronto Maple Leafs forward Mitch Marner is on the verge of becoming a free agent, and there are some desperate teams looking to sign him for exorbitant prices.
It is expected that the superstar winger will test free agency. Additionally, there are some analysts who expect him to leave the Leafs completely.
Who will sign Mitch Marner?
However,
according to a new report from Frank Seravalli, teams like the Anaheim Ducks are considering a huge offer to Marner that he won't be able to refuse. While most teams are willing to offer between $13.5 and $14 million per season, Seravalli claims the Ducks could offer $15 million.
Another report from David Pagnotta of The Fourth Period suggests that the Ducks aren't the only team willing to offer that kind of money.
The San Jose Sharks and the Columbus Blue Jackets are two other teams with the cap space to make a yearly salary like that work.
The salary cap is going up, so salaries are going to increase across the board. However, that does not make $15 million per season any less absurd for a guy like Mitch Marner.
He has only reached 100 points once in his career, and he is a complete no-show whenever the playoffs roll around.
But desperate times call for desperate measures, and the three teams mentioned are in major need of a playoff appearance.
For now, the Golden Knights and the Panthers remain the frontrunners. The winning, the money, and the taxes are the main reasons why.
