The Toronto Maple Leafs are thinking big heading into the offseason, and one of their top targets just so happens to be an underperforming Nashville Predators forward.
Jonathan Marchessault had a career year with the Las Vegas Golden Knights in 2023-24 as he managed 42 goals and a total of 69 points.
However, the following year, he was ousted and ended up with the Nashville Predators. Unfortunately, he did not play as well and only had 21 goals.
What is next for Jonathan Marchessault?
Unfortunately, the Toronto Maple Leafs have gotten some pretty bad news as it pertains to the forward, and it all comes from Elliotte Friedman on the latest episode of '32 Thoughts.'
Essentially, the Marchessault only wants to play for teams with no state taxes. He has been spoiled with that situation for years, and wants to keep things the same.
Marchessault is really blunt in his feelings towards choosing a place to play in 2025.
He's moved from a no-tax state [Florida] to another no-tax state [Tennessee], so any deal would be necessitated by a move to another no-tax state.
Ontario is known for having a high tax rate. In fact, all Canadian teams have that reputation. With that being said, it makes sense that Marchessault would want to stay away.
This is becoming a real issue in the NHL as numerous players are angling for jobs in Florida, Las Vegas, or even Nashville. The tax situation is advantageous, and the players are catching on.
In the future, this could prove problematic for the Leafs and various other Canadian franchises. It is especially bad news for free agency.
The league has no plans to fix the state tax issue. At the end of the day, this wasn't an issue 10 years ago. Regardless, it is an issue now and fans and analysts alike are growing concerned.
