Edmonton Oilers captain Connor McDavid is looking for a new contract, and with the Toronto Maple Leafs hoping to replace Mitch Marner, they officially have an option.
Connor McDavid is the best hockey player in the world, and with a new contract extension on the horizon, he is likely to be paid like it.
Connor McDavid contract negotiations
According to Frank Seravalli of Bleacher Report, McDavid's salary demands have been made crystal clear.
Essentially, the forward will be signing a deal in the $16-$17.5 million per season range. This would make him the highest-paid player in the history of the NHL.
My guess it's not going to be an 8 year deal...probably 4, and somewhere between $16 and $17.5m in AAV, those are just ballparks; not really even confident saying completely it's going to be a 4 year deal
While McDavid hasn't demanded this salary from the Maple Leafs specifically, it remains clear that this is the kind of contract he wants from any team that would sign him.
The next highest-paid player is
Leon Draisaitl at $14 million per season, and there is no doubt that McDavid should be paid more, especially with the salary cap going up.
Overall, the McDavid contract is going to be a huge story going forward, and it seems like negotiations are set to begin in August.
If McDavid signs, then there will be a lot of disappointed teams, the Toronto Maple Leafs included.
